Ken Garfield, director of communications at Myers Park United Methodist Church in Charlotte , N.C. , is former religion editor and columnist at The Charlotte Observer . He speaks frequently to church and other faith and nonprofit groups on how best to share your news with the community, tell your stories to your congregation, and other challenges in communications. He will talk in Goldsboro about the various platforms to spread the word, including print, Web sites, advertising and more. He'll explore the effectiveness of electronic communications like flat-screen TVs in the church. He'll discuss branding issues such as logos, mission statements and the like. He'll help us understand how to get the word out to the secular media, and how to relate more effectively with the community beyond the sanctuary doors. He can lead a conversation on dealing with the media when a crisis hits your church; the best use of bulletin boards and signage in and out of the building; how to engage church members in communications; and how to communicate even in tough financial times. As always, his talks leave plenty of time for Q&A and give and take.
Garfield , 55, spent 31 years in newspapers, including 22 at The Observer, the last 12 supervising its coverage of faith and values in the Carolinas ' largest city. He wrote a syndicated column, appeared frequently on radio and TV shows, supervised a weekly faith section, talked often to church groups and published a book of his faith-based columns: So Go On And Sing . He also wrote kids' biographies of NASCAR stars Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon, and is an often-quoted expert on Charlotte-born evangelist Billy Graham. He and his wife, Sharon, an elder at Sharon Presbyterian Church in Charlotte , have two children: Matt, 27, a newspaper reporter, and Ellen, 24, a social worker. Both graduated from Davidson College . His wife owns Traditions , a retail furniture and interior design business in Charlotte .
